Our Calgary dentists use fillings, inlays and onlays to repair tooth decay, cracks, fractures and more.
What is a Dental Filling?
A dental filling is a treatment that restores the function and structure of a tooth that has been damaged by decay or external trauma. If you have a cavity, your dentist may keep an eye on it or fill it right away.
Filling Material
At Pensak Houghton, we use white (composite) fillings which can be closely matched to your existing teeth.
The Filling Process
To fill a cavity, your dentist may first give you a local anesthetic so you do not feel any pain.
Your dentist will then clean out all traces of decay and fill the space with the chosen material.
With proper care, most dental fillings can last for many years. They are not, however, permanent and may need to be replaced.
Inlays & Onlays
Dental inlays and onlays are restoration that are made outside of your mouth to fit your tooth when it is too damaged to support a standard filling but not damaged enough to warrant a crown.
In these cases, your dentist will cement the custom-made filling into place.
Inlays are used to repair decay in the pits and fissures of a tooth, between the cusps. Onlays, on the other hand, will cover one or more cusps as well.
